The Hobie Cat Tandem Island
Is it a kayak? A Trimaran? A commercial vessel? Or all three, plus more? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. The Tandem Island, from the Hobiecat Company, is everything you’ll ever need in a small boat. Windy? Take it for a fast, fun sail. Calm? Go for a pleasant paddle OR pedal! Friends and family? Add the optional trampolines to the aka’s and enjoy being on the water with several people. Expeditions? Load ‘er up and take off.

Both the Adventure Island and the Tandem Island share the innovative and simple outrigger system that transforms a kayak into a lightweight, load hauling, fast sailing beast! A few clicks and the aka’s are inserted into aluminum crossbars mounted on the kayak’s deck. Another few hooks attaches the ama’s to the aka’s. Drop the Mirage Drive’s (the other transformative part of Hobie kayaks!) into their slots, load up, and take off.

We have used this rig to travel from our rental dock to a little beach for demos several times now, with up to 8 SUP’s loaded on while towing 2 single and 1 tandem kayak. Sailing with it even! We’ve also done a few surf launches and some offshore sailing…ready for an expedition!
